Party planning basics 05/28/2010

Planning your child's party can be as simple as just cake and punch with family and friend, or as lavish as renting out a venue and hiring a circus act to perform.  As with any event success is based on how well you plan.  Below you will find some fun tips for planning your child's party.

Plan in advance.

If possible begin your planning at least 3 months prior to the event.  This will allow you to develop a clear idea of what both you and your child will enjoy.  Also this allows you to browse the web for great ideas and shop for the best assortment of quality party supplies.

Recruit some help.
Enlist family and friends to help with the planning and managing of the party.

Pick a theme.
Whether you choose an elaborate royal princess party or base the theme around your child's favorite character or color, stick with it.
Choosing a theme allows you to organize your thoughts and makes coordination easier.  Every aspect of your party should revolve around your theme.   Need help coming up with a theme.  Check out some of these awesome sites for ideas.

Gather your supplies in advance.
Advance purchases often guarantee best price and selection.  No one wants to be out and about the day of the party looking for Abby Cadabby wings!  Evolutionz offers an extensive selection of party supplies at a low price delivered to your doorstep.

Food
Children tend to remember what they did a party vs. what they ate.  Keep your menu simple and kid friendly.  Keep plenty of beverages on hand for little ones.

Games
Party games should be fun and no one should be a "loser".  Choose games where the children will have fun and everyone can have some level of "winning".

Favors
Party favors tend to be a heavily debated topic.  Some say its a must others say its a waste.  Whatever your preference choose something creative and fun.  Anyone can give a bag of candy and dollar store toys.  Try giving a favor that the children will remember and use for years.  Remember your favor should coordinate with your theme.  So if you're throwing a superheroe party choose a fun favor like a cape & mask set.

Invitations
The biggest question here is who to invite.  The rule of thumb is for parties for children 10 & under you invite the number of children based on your child's age plus 1.  Limiting the number of guests will help stretch your budget as well as help keep your party on schedule.   Larger parties for smaller children usually are chaotic, because it is difficult to keep small children on task in large group settings (ask any K-4 teacher).  Invitations should be mailed out at least 3-4 weeks prior to the event.  This allows ample time for responses.
